For artists, cellular automata like Game of Life can inspire them to improvise on these systems or to model emergent systems of their own, rivaling nature in their complexity, beauty, and surprise. One of the most famous models of cellular automation is John Horton Conway’s Game of Life.Īfter playing with the Game of Life, I and many others get a feeling that everything, no matter how complicated and mysterious it appears to be on the surface, may also be reducible to a basic set of algorithms. Humans are a byproduct of emergent behavior, as is our economy, the weather, and traffic.Īrtists, mathematicians, and computer scientists often generate their own complex emergent “ant colony-like” systems using a large grid of simple black and white squares called cellular automata. Emergence is not limited to our animal friends. Flocks of birds and schools of fish operate in a similar manner, following a set of simple rules locally that result in complex behaviors globally. The sophisticated emergent behavior of the colony cannot be predicted by understanding the limited capabilities of the individual ants. But when combined with the many other ants in the colony, a new intelligence emerges at the colony level that allows them to adapt, defend themselves, and find food. Each ant is pretty dumb, defenseless, and guided by very basic rules. In this exhibition, we are talking specifically about generative art written in computer code that includes elements of emergence or emergent behavior.Įmergence happens when two or more things come together to form something larger that has different properties than would be expected from the sum of the parts. ![]() Generative art is art that leverages a non-human, autonomous system which can help generate features in the artwork that would otherwise be left up to the artist to decide. But before we jump into their art, let’s first define generative art, emergence, cellular automata, and the Game of Life. This exhibition explores the idea of creating great complexity from deceptively simple algorithms or rule sets through the art of four generative artists: Alexander Reben, Manolo Gamboa Naon, Kjetil Golid, and Jared Tarbell. These three interrelated discoveries completely changed my world view by showing me that much of the complexity we find in nature can be simulated and emulated using relatively basic algorithms. That changed when I started to write code in graduate school and learned about three new topics within a few weeks of each other: However, I developed a math phobia early on and never saw what, for many, is the obvious thread between the worlds of art, math, and nature. I frequently sketched and painted from nature. ![]() This essay is for the exhibition The Game of Life - Emergence in Generatiive Art, online at Kate Vass Gallery and is, in part, a tribute to the work of mathematician John Horton Conway, who passed away on April 11th, 2020, from COVID-19.įor many people, it is hard to see the elegant connection that exists between art, math, and nature.

If you can’t find any wild-grown witch hazel in your foraging endeavors, you may choose to plant your own Witch Hazel bushes at home. Witch hazel can be found as either a large shrub or a small tree, displaying bright yellow flowers throughout the cold winter months. The witch hazel plant blooms instead of dropping its leaves for the winter. Witch hazel grows wild throughout northeastern and southeastern North America -exceptionally well in the Appalachian Mountains – and thrives in moist habitats, such as stream banks or damp woods.Ī great way to spot a witch hazel plant in your area is to search shaded forests in late October or early November for the only blossoming plant. If you make it yourself you’ll always know exactly what is in your own supply. (More uses are listed at the end of this post.)Īnother concern is that the witch hazel you buy in the stores may only have a tiny trace amount of the actual witch hazel plant in it, may have unnecessary additives, and is significantly more expensive. In addition to cleaning wounds, it can be soothing for hemorrhoids or as a skin toner, with moisturizer applied afterward to prevent skin drying out. George Washington’s brothers built estates that still stand in West Virginia. After the Washington Post revealed the secret in 1992, the bunker was decommissioned and is now open for public tours. The bunker opened in 1961 and remained on constant alert as a nuclear fallout shelter and emergency relocation facility for the U.S. For 30 years, West Virginia was home to a top-secret bunker for Congress to use in case of a nuclear war.ĭuring the height of the Cold War in 1958, a top-secret project began to construct a bunker 720 feet beneath The Greenbrier resort in White Sulphur Springs. The first five RFD carriers began service on October 1, 1896, out of post offices in Charles Town, Halltown and Uvilla. When RFD service began in 1896, Postmaster General William Wilson introduced it first to his home state. Farm families needed to travel to distant post offices to retrieve their mail or hire private companies to deliver. While city dwellers began to receive free mail delivery in 1863, the same was not true for the majority of Americans who lived in rural areas. Rural Free Delivery (RFD) was inaugurated in West Virginia. (In 1769, land speculators attempted to establish a colony called Vandalia on much of the same footprint as Westsylvania.) 5. The Continental Congress ignored the petition along with another plea in 1783 to make Westsylvania the 14th state. In 1775, a group of 2,000 residents signed a petition asking the Continental Congress to create a 14th colony called Westsylvania, which would have encompassed all of today’s West Virginia along with portions of Maryland, Virginia, Kentucky and Pennsylvania. Sectional differences brewed inside Virginia for decades before the Civil War. Western Virginians had attempted to form the state of Westsylvania after the American Revolution. Voters selected Charleston over Martinsburg and Clarksburg, and the capital finally moved to its permanent home in 1885. The capital’s location was ultimately put to a statewide vote in 1877, but Wheeling was not among the choices. In 1870, the capital shifted to Charleston, but it returned to Wheeling in 1875. After West Virginia achieved statehood, the capital remained in the city. The delegates from the western counties seeking statehood gathered in Wheeling to begin the process of joining the Union. Wheeling was West Virginia’s original capital. When the constitution for the proposed state was finalized in 1862, however, the name had changed to the more generic West Virginia. The name honored a Native American tribe and a major state river of the same name. ![]() In the wake of Virginia’s secession, a convention of delegates from western Virginia met in Wheeling in 1861 for the purpose of forming the “State of Kanawha,” which incorporated 39 counties. From the state’s earliest days, slave-holding plantation owners in the eastern part of Virginia dominated the state’s economy and politics, leaving the self-sufficient farmers who lived in the rugged western counties, where slavery was far less prevalent, feeling ignored. The schism that split the United States in two during the Civil War did the same to Virginia. Similar to many other survival games, you will immediately set off into the world searching for resources and rare loot to better yourself. While solo play is entirely possible, Tribes of Midgard does empathize that playing in co-op is a sure way to victory as the mode has some intensely leveled beasts and other challenges. My journey into the world of Tribes of Midgard starts me off in the Saga mode, the game’s main beef. However, that’s not what Tribes of Midgard put itself out as, but instead as a massive, almost survival MMO-ish open world where teamwork is an absolute must. That’s the gist of it, and if you go in expecting some heavy, world-building story then you’ll end up feeling a bit letdown. By day, you’ll scavenge the large open world, solo, or with up to nine other players in hopes of getting stronger, building better defenses, and preparing for the imminent doom of Ragnarök. Taking place in a Midgard village, you start your journey off as an underwear wearing Viking whose sole purpose is to protect the seed of Yggdrasil, or more commonly known as the World Tree.
